One Mountain Man’s Struggle Against Depression

I’ve had a life-long struggle against severe depression. I was also sexually abused as a small boy. On this page, I will link to posts about my struggle and the consequences of my abuse.

It is difficult for most people to talk about these experiences. I don’t seem to have that inhibition. I’m not a doctor. I’m not an expert on mental health. But I hope that sharing how I’ve fought against depression and the consequences of my abuse helps other men like me.

Jeremiah Johnson (starring Robert Redford) was one of my dad’s favorite movies. It is now one of my favorite movies. I’ve always tried to be a mountain man like Jeremiah Johnson. I chose “One Mountain Man’s Struggle Against Depression” as the title for this group of blog posts because of this movie. We want men in American society to be like a mountain man. Tough. Strong. Fighting the world with a hunting knife and a good rifle. We leave those men little room for struggle with mental health problems. But if you remember, Jeremiah Johnson himself suffered great grief after the murder of his family. He, like me, struggled with grief, sadness, and loneliness.

I hope you benefit from reading these posts as much as I benefit from writing them.
